Throughout this course, students learn how to analyse the internal and external environment, evaluate strategic options, and understand how strategies are formulated and implemented in the real business world.

 ECM1504 Strategic Management

This subject strengthens students’ ability to think critically, make strategic choices, and understand the role of leadership, resources, and organisational capability in driving long-term success. It also prepares you to analyse complex business situations using tools such as SWOT/TOWS, VRIO, Porter’s Five Forces, strategic groups, BCG Matrix, and balancing short-term performance with long-term strategic positioning.

1️⃣ Assignment 1: Group Strategic Audit Report – 30%

Marks are given based on:

• Understanding of the selected company and industry

• Use of strategic tools (e.g. SWOT, STEEP, Porter’s Five Forces, VRIO)

• Quality of analysis and discussion (not description only)

• Link between analysis and strategic issues

• Report structure, clarity, and referencing

2️⃣ Assignment 2: Group Case Study – 20%

a. Task 1 - Case Study Report  – 10%
b. Task 2 - PESTEL/SWOT/Analysis  - 10%

Marks are based on:

• Clear identification of problems

• Use of relevant strategic models

• Practical and logical recommendations

3️⃣ Test – 10%

Marks are based on:

• Understanding of key strategic management concepts

• Ability to apply concepts to questions given

• Clear and well-structured answers
